Select term:

Percentage

A percentage is another way of expressing a proportion . A percentage is equal to the proportion times 100.

For example, suppose we have a sample of four pets - a bird, a fish, a dog, and a cat. We might ask what percentage has four legs. Only two pets (the dog and the cat) have four legs. Therefore, the proportion of pets with four legs is 2/4 or 0.50. Since a percentage is equal to 100 times the proportion, the percentage of pets with four legs would be 100 * 0.50 or 50 percent.
