Graphing Calculators: Overview

There are three major players in the graphing calculator market: Casio, HP, and Texas Instruments.

  • Casio. For educational use, mainly in high school and junior college, Casio offers the FX 9750 and CFX 9850 models. Both are easy to use. For more advanced mathematical and programming applications, the company offers the FX 2.0 model, which has a Computer Algebra System (CAS).

  • Hewlett Packard. Hewlett Packard serves educational and professional users. The HP 39 series is sold in high school/college markets; the HP 48 series, in science/engineering markets; and the HP 49 series, in both educational and professional markets. The HP 49 series includes a CAS. Some users reported keyboard problems with the HP 48 and 49.

  • Texas Instruments. Texas Instruments covers all markets. For students 10 to 14 years old, it offers the TI 73; for statistics, the TI 83 and TI 84 series; for calculus, the TI 86 and TI 89 series, as well as the Voyage 200. The TI 89 has a CAS, and the Voyage 200 has a keyboard.

Texas Instruments is the 900 pound gorilla. It owns over 90% of the graphing calculator market.
